10 easy ways to make yourself happy everyday

We all want to be happier, right? Well, it’s easier than you think… Here are 10 easy things you can do that will help sort out your worries and put you on the path to happiness.

Living in a fast-paced city like Singapore, we are always rushing through life and often neglect our personal happiness whether it’s too much work, family issues or not enough time for exercise. We end up frustrated, unmotivated and sometimes we even get sick.

So, how can we make ourselves – and those around us – happier? Start by being ‘good’ to yourself and you’ll find that the rest of your worries will sort themselves out.

Here are 10 easy ways to make yourself happy every day…

1. KEEP IT SIMPLE…

Rather than jumping straight into a full-on meditation routine, or signing yourself up for a course on psychology, start with the basics… Get enough sleep and don’t starve yourself. These two simple things will go a surprisingly long way towards making you feel happier.

2. DON’T GO TO BED ANGRY…

We all know that you should never go to bed angry after fighting with your partner, right? Well, that same adage counts when it comes to other things too. This doesn’t mean you have to talk out every little thing that’s annoyed you all day. Draw a line under it. Being angry about minor annoyances will just make your bad feelings, worse. If you can’t do anything about it right then, forget about it.

3. DON’T TAKE REJECTION PERSONALLY…

Sometimes people really just don’t want you – whether it’s for a job position or an idea you might have. There could be any number of reasons why you didn’t get that job – you might be TOO qualified, or they might not be able to afford the salary you’re asking for. Sometimes you just need to accept the rejection and move on. Think about your successes and the people who love you. Then turn that ‘no’ into motivation to do better.

4. DO SOMETHING NEW, EVEN IF YOU DO IT BADLY

We can’t all be perfect at sports, or a great cook, or a graceful dancer … or anything else you’ve always wanted to try but have been too afraid to because you don’t think you’ll be good at it. People who try – and do – new things are happier than people who stick to a routine. Even ‘failing’ at something can be fun! You’ll at least have a great memory, even if no-one can eat your food.

5. DON’T GIVE YOURSELF A ‘TREAT’ IF YOU’RE FEELING DOWN

When we’re feeling depressed or sad, we often give ourselves a ‘treat’ … It could be an extra piece of cake, or that Chanel bag you’ve been eyeing, but the ‘pleasure’ you feel will be short-lived. Then will come the guilt and feelings that you’ve lost control or other bad consequences like a maxed-out credit card – which will just add to your unhappiness. Sometimes it’s better to just go for a walk or listen to some funky music.

6. THE BEST IS NOT ALWAYS THE BEST…

Sometimes good enough, is OK. If you make a decision that a particular dish or a place to stay is good, stick with that decision. Second guessing whether or not you made the right choice is just going to make you angry and the pleasure you might have had in your experience is gone. What’s done, is done. So just enjoy it.

7. YES, EXERCISE CAN HELP…

We all know that we should be exercising more but no matter how often we tell ourselves to get up off the couch and do something, we stay right on that couch. Telling yourself you’re ‘too busy’ or ‘too tired’ is just an excuse. Even a quick walk around the neighbourhood will improve your mood. Some sort of exercise is better than nothing.

8. EAT CASHEWS, ALMONDS & HAZELNUTS

Having enough energy to deal with your daily life is super important. Yes, getting enough sleep and some exercise will help with this, but sometimes you need a little extra boost which is why you need to eat nuts. Nuts are a good source of magnesium; being low on magnesium will make you feel tired as it’s used to convert sugar to energy. So, eat more nuts.

9. MAKE THE DECISION TO BE HAPPY…

OK, we know that sounds a bit weird but it really can help. Try telling yourself that you deserve to be happy, and you CAN be happy. Take some time alone to think about the good things in your life and also to make plans on how to fix the things that aren’t working.

10. GET A MASSAGE…

Yep, it could be as simple as getting your body more relaxed and working out all the kinks in your neck and back. If you think you don’t have the time for a regular massage, then get your hands on something you can use at home, like a massage chair for example. Gone are the days of massive, solid massage chairs taking up too much room in your house; the OSIM uLove massage chair is more compact and pretty – there are five colours available (including a very on-trend teal) so you’ll definitely find one to match your space. Plus it’s even able to massage body parts like your hands! While you’re being massaged in the calm of your own home, you can think through all the points above too!
